If you are booking as an individual (rather than someone making arrangements for a commercial entity) and wish to travel with a van or horsebox, please refer to the notes below and the linked Irish and UK government advice which will help you to choose the right booking options to follow. This will vary according to the contents or goods you are carrying and the route to/from Great Britain you would like to travel on.
Great Britain – Northern Ireland v/v

- Vans/Horseboxes over 12m long regardless of the goods being carried
- Vans/Horseboxes regardless of size carrying commercial or chargeable goods which are subject to import/export customs declarations *
- A UK Goods Movement Reference (GMR) is required *
- If a VAT invoice is required
*Prior to making your booking you should check the guidance at GOV.UK [Gov.UK guidance]. GMRs are required for all commercial / chargeable movements from GB to NI and in a very few cases from NI to GB.
Great Britain – Republic of Ireland v/v
If one or more of the following applies to your shipment, it must be booked via our freight reservation office by calling +44 (0)1772 368195 (UK) or +353 (0)1 699 4436 (ROI) / email stenaline@freightlink.co.uk or stenalineireland@freightlink.ie. Otherwise please book via our Travel websites here.
- Vans commercially registered in Ireland
- Vans/Horseboxes over 12m long regardless of the goods being carried
- Vans regardless of size carrying commercial or chargeable goods which are subject to import/export customs declarations *
- Either (or both) a UK Goods Movement Reference (GMR) or an Irish Pre Boarding Notification (PBN) is required *
- Vehicles / horseboxes carrying a horse or pony
- If a VAT invoice is required
*Prior to making your booking you should check the guidance at both gov.uk [Gov.UK guidance] and revenue.ie [Revenue.ie guidance]. GMRs are required for all commercial / chargeable movements from GB to ROI from 1/1/22, but will not be required for these movements between ROI and GB until a later date (to be confirmed). PBNs are required for all commercial / chargeable movements, in both directions, currently.
Great Britain – Netherlands v/v

- Vans/Horseboxes over 8m long regardless of the goods being carried
- Vans/Horseboxes regardless of size carrying commercial or chargeable goods which are subject to import/export customs declarations *
- A UK Goods Movement Reference (GMR) is required *
- Vehicles / horseboxes carrying a horse or pony
- If a VAT invoice is required
*Prior to making your booking and providing the declaration below you should check the guidance at GOV.UK [Gov.UK guidance]. GMRs are required for all driver accompanied commercial / chargeable movements from NL to GB.
